“ There are many ways an object can make you smile. Familiarity, surprise, beauty, satisfaction, pride, simplicity, humour or wonder. If an object can stimulate a smile whilst or even because of performing its function, it is well designed.” Sebastian Bergne Sebastian Bergne (1966) lives and works in London and Bologna. His work is characterised by his approach rather than by a formal signature. There is a pursuit of innovation in his work that comes from a delicate combination of cultural reference, humour, functional revaluation, and a close contact with materials and manufacturing technology. Each project is a new beginning... He studied Industrial Design from 1985-8 at the Central School of Art and Design (London) and then at the Royal College of Art (London), graduating in 1990 with distinction. Sebastian Bergne’s studio was established in 1990 and has collaborated with many international manufacturing companies such as Authentics, DeBeers, Driade, Habitat, Luceplan, Magis, Moulinex, O-Luce, Vitra and WMF on products and furniture for mass production. The work has been widely published, exhibited, included in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the Design Museum (London) and honoured with numerous international design awards.
