George Sowden’s approach to the world of vessels is unique and strong for its definition of irregular shapes: prototypes impossible to copy, even if sweetened by the use of pure white material, capable of creating sensual light and shadows.

George J. Sowden

George J. Sowden (Leeds 1942) is a designer with experience in various fields of activity from industrial design of mass produced electronic products, to handmade low volume artisan objects. His first working experience in Italy was with Ettore Sottsass. He collaborated with Olivetti for more than 20 years, was one of the founder members of Memphis and has been consultant to: Alessi, Bodum, Fratelli Guzzini, Lorenz, Rancilio, Steelcase, Swatch, Swidpowell and Telecom Italia, amongst others. He established SowdenDesign in 1981 with which he develops his consultant activities as an industrial designer. His work has been published in many books on design, most recently ‘Designing the 21st Century’ – Taschen. In 1990 his research work was subject of an exhibition ‘George J. Sowden Designing’ organised by the Musées des Arts Décoratifs of Bordeaux and Marseille SowdenDesign has offices in Milan and San Francisco.
